About this event

Presented by:
Stephanie Towns, PsyD, ABPP

About the Webinar:
The webinar will provide a brief overview of the neuroanatomy of sleep and healthy sleep function. It will describe the relationship between sleep and cognition in health adults as well as the changes in sleep that are associated with aging. Finally, the role of sleep in neurological disorders will be reviewed, with a particular focus on neurodegenerative disorders.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the major neuroanatomical structures involved in sleep regulation
  2. Describe the impact of sleep disruption and disorders on cognition in healthy adults
  3. Discuss the role of sleep in neurological disorders, specifically updated literature on the role of sleep in neurodegenerative disease processes

About the Speaker:
Dr. Towns is an Associate Professor of Neurology and Neuropsychology Division Training Director at Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Towns earned her doctorate in psychology from Antioch University New England and completed her predoctoral internship at the James A Haley VA Hospital in Tampa, FL. Dr. Towns went on to complete a postdoctoral fellowship in neuropsychology and brain imaging research at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. Dr. Towns' clinical research primarily involves the relationship between sleep and cognition in patients with neurological disorders. Her initial work examined the role of sleep in acute traumatic brain injury (TBI) recovery and the feasibility of objective sleep measurement in inpatient settings. Dr. Towns later examined the role of sleep in multiple sclerosis and is currently working on a project to examine the feasibility of objective sleep measurement in older adults.
